- What is your experience as a tutor or teacher?
For four years at UCLA, I participated in a program designed to teach molecular biology to underserved LAUSD students. Working in small groups, I guided students through lab experiments and presented concepts in innovative, non-traditional ways. Additionally, I completed a teaching assistantship at a LA-area high school, where I tutored in several sciences classes.
More recently, I taught a summer course in Earth Science at a high school in South Bronx, NYC and a fall course in Physics at a high school in New Haven, CT.
- What subjects are you best at?
I have the most training and experience in the physical sciences (physics, chemistry, earth science/astronomy, etc.) and mathematics (algebra to college-level).
In addition, I am willing to tutor in biology, English/composition, and Western (American/European) history. I have successfully completed college coursework in all of the above areas.
- What is your schedule like? What days and times are you available to tutor?
During the week (M-F), I am available every day after 6 p.m. On the weekends, I am available at any time.
I have 1-2 rotating days per week when my work schedule permits me to tutor before 6 p.m., so tutoring in the early afternoon may be a possibility as well.
- Where did you attend school? What degrees do you have?
I graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in Astrophysics in June 2014. While at UCLA, I also completed extensive coursework in biology and chemistry as a microbiology student.
- What cities can you tutor in (i.e. how far can you drive to tutor)?
I am willing to travel within 30 minutes of my home in South Corona. Cities include Corona, Norco, Eastvale, Lake Elsinore, Anaheim Hills, Yorba Linda, and Chino/Chino Hills.
- Are you open to tutoring students via Skype or another online platform?
I am open to tutoring online in certain instances (e.g., illness, travel, schedule rearrangements, etc.), but I would prefer tutoring students in person.
This is based on experience and a personal philosophy that teaching in-person fosters a better learning environment. Plus, it helps to be able to see exactly what a student is writing down, step-by-step!
- What are your future career goals?
I am pursuing a career in science education. I envision a scientifically-literate nation where every individual has received a quality education, empowering them to make informed decisions about the crucial science-based issues facing both this country and the world-at-large.
- What are your hobbies? What do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy running, reading, stargazing, geocaching, catching movies with friends, and finding Southern California’s best hidden coffee shops.
- What accomplishments have you achieved while working as a tutor/teacher?
The high school where I taught Physics required all students to take a network-wide exam at the end of each quarter. For the fall quarter, my students earned the highest average in the network, outperforming three other seasoned teachers’ classes.
I expect this was accomplished due to an understanding of students’ individual needs and data-driven planning designed to maximize students’ strengths and focus on key areas of misunderstanding.
- What do you enjoy the most about tutoring/teaching?
I will never get tired of watching lecture-weary students leap into action at the sight of “science toys” (i.e., lab equipment). Some students who tried their best to doze off in class continuously amazed me during lab experiments. It’s a testament to the fact that all students learn differently.
Helping students discover how they learn is – in my opinion – the greatest reward of teaching. It not only involves a great deal of discovery and reflection, but also ensures they are prepared for academic challenges in the future.
