- What is your experience as a tutor?
I am part of the Literacy Initiative at UC Riverside that promotes literacy in the Riverside community. This means that I work with students at nearby elementary schools who are struggling in reading. I have also worked at the University Extension Center at UCR as a Conversation Partner. I have worked with three international students at improving their English skills through this program. I have also traveled abroad several times teaching English to underprivileged children in Taiwan.
- What subjects are you best at?
I can tutor all aspects of English (reading, writing, comprehension, phonics, etc.) and ESL (English as a Second Language). I can speak Taiwanese and I am familiar with Mandarin.
- What is your schedule like? What days and times are you available to tutor?
I am available Mondays and Wednesdays until 6:30 pm. I am free Friday until 4 pm.
Tutor’s schedule is subject to change.
- Where did you attend school (or what school are you currently attending)? What degrees do you have and/or are currently working towards?
I am currently a fourth year student at UC Riverside. I am majoring in English and I have a minor in Education.
- What cities can you tutor in (i.e. how far are you willing to drive to tutor)?
I tutor in Riverside, Corona, Moreno Valley, and San Bernardino.
- Are you open to tutoring students via Skype or another online platform?
I am open to tutoring students via Skype. I am willing to do whatever it takes to make sure my student gets the help he or she needs.
- What are your future career goals?
Eventually, I would love to become a middle school or high school English teacher. I would also love to go abroad and teach English to underprivileged children.
- What are your hobbies? What do you like to do for fun?
I love traveling. I have been to over 13 countries. My favorite place to vacation would be Taiwan. I also love reading. Two of my favorite books include The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy and Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin. I also enjoy hanging out with friends and trying new places to eat. I love all kinds of desserts!
- What accomplishments have you achieved while working as a tutor/teacher? For example: Helped student go from a C in math to an A.
I helped the college students I worked with through the Conversation Partner program become more confident in their ability to communicate and express themselves through speaking English. After working with them on grammar and diction, they became much more sure of themselves socially and academically.
As a part of the Literacy Initiative I have helped children become more assertive readers. The children I work with tend to guess at the words that they don’t know how to say. After consistently working with them week after week, they have become more confident in sounding out and tackling words they are unfamiliar with. They have become proficient readers.
When I taught abroad, I was able to work with kids that knew nothing about the English language. In the end they could recognize and pronounce basic conversational words and phrases with confidence.
- What do you enjoy the most about tutoring/teaching?
I enjoy teaching because it is my way of giving back to the community. Being a teacher is so meaningful. When I look back on all the teachers I’ve had, I remember a few that stand out to me. Those teachers cared for me and challenged me to be better. My goal is to be that teacher for someone one day.
