First off, allow me to thank you for signing up for The Tutoring Solution‘s Writing Program. This first assignment, The Autobiography, is designed to establish a format for your writing. The writing sample that you complete will allow us to get to know a little bit about you and analyze your writing to develop measures that will help us best develop your writing ability.


Your essay needs to be five paragraphs long. It needs to contain an opening paragraph, three body paragraphs and a closing paragraph.

Introductory Paragraph:

The beginning of your introductory paragraph is known as a hook. A hook is supposed to capture the reader’s attention and get them to read more. There are many different ways to write a good hook. One example of a good hook is the personal anecdote. For this essay, I would like you to use the personal anecdote to start your essay. The personal anecdote is a short, entertaining account of something that happened to you. The anecdote must be different then any other event you describe in your body paragraphs. The last sentence of your introductory paragraph should be your thesis.  The thesis tells the reader what your essay is going to be about and introduces your three body paragraphs.

Three Body Paragraphs:

You will choose three separate topics in your body paragraphs to write about. You may choose one of the following or come up with one of your own:

  • a childhood memory
  • an embarrassing moment
  • a proud moment
  • a gift that was meaningful
  • a pet that meant a lot
  • the funniest thing that ever happened to you
  • a great vacation
  • a moment of personal triumph
  • a meaningful toy
  • a moment of conflict

Concluding Paragraph:

Your closing paragraph needs begin with a link to the personal anecdote you described in the beginning. A link refers to your hook in order to bring your essay full circle. In the middle of your conclusion, restate the thesis that you used for the last sentence of your introductory paragraph. Be sure to word it differently then you did before. Lastly, use a clever ending for the last sentence of your essay. This sentence should aim to make the reader happy, surprised, shocked, or pleased.

The Time Machine

This assignment asks you to travel in time to any date in the past, or any date in the future. Your writing sample will be based upon your experience on this new world and what you imagine it would be like. Let your imagination run wild! I will look forward to hearing about your time machine adventure.

Your opening paragraph must create interest by explaining how you feel and what you see in this new time period. Your thesis must introduce three topics of this different world that you are going to discuss.

Each of the three body paragraphs must cover one topic of the new world in detail. Be sure to choose three separate topics and do not overlap the ideas from one body paragraph to another.  Here are some examples: 

  • Where do the inhabitants live?
  • What types of things do people like to do?
  • What types of games do they play?
  • How do they live together?
  • What do they do for food?
  • Any topic you choose will work, just make sure that each paragraph is about a different topic

The conclusion must include a link, the restatement of your thesis and an interesting ending. The link will revert back to your hook. The restatement of your thesis should be similar to your thesis, but worded differently. The interesting ending should be your attempt to make the reader feel good about what he or she has just read.
